A recent post by the marvelous Molly got me to thinking. What is my favorite automobile? You know, the one that makes my head turn when it drives by and my heart beat a little bit faster.
So, I’m imagining I just won a prize labeled “Free automobile of my choice“. What would I choose?
While there are many cars that make me go “Mmmmmmmm”, my first love was Porsche. I grew up in the backseat of a Ruby Red 356 Cabriolet. I swear it is why I’m only 5’4″. Every family vacation was spent at sport car events from Porsche Parades to Road Rallys to Sports Car Club of America Race Weekends. To this day, there is nothing quite as sweet as the sound of a well tuned engine to my ears. But I digress. The question at hand, what would I choose as my “free auto”?
Today – Porsche Boxster S – silver
When I was 10 – Porsche 911 Turbo – red
Now, lest you think I’m just a material girl…I’m not sure I’d ever feel comfortable driving a vehicle that cost that much money. But reality and “free cars” seem an unlikely pair.
Dare I start a photo meme? Why…yes, I dare.
Tap. Tap. Tap. What would you choose as your free auto (assuming you can’t convert this offer to cash to donate to a more worthy cause)? Post to your blog or flickr.
Ladies and gentleman, start your engines!

Hey Glenda….points to: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mattrobin/
Luv the bug, Jon! I thought you might pick this one (bug envy).
Oooooo, Matt…that Aston Martin….be still my heart! Now I wish I could find an mp3 for the roar of that engine.
As for that dangerous Nissan…tell him not to hurt the Porsches. They are such nice people! Although I always thought their cars were sexier!
….” Now I wish I could find an mp3 for the roar of that engine.”
Now there’s a challenge!! If I had more energy on a Sunday, I’d grab a microphone and recording device and head over to Newport Pagnell right now! *Laughs*
“Yes, Mr.Nice-man-with-Aston-Martin, please can you just rev the engine a bit more for me…thanks…it’s for a friend who has not got long to live and never heard an Aston before – it’s their dying wish…that’s it – more revs thankyou!”
Hi Glenda,
I’m away so I can’t take photos of my own car, which in many ways is my dream car, a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GST (convertible). I do have a picture of its butt, but you can’t quite see the styling.
One car I’d have really enjoyed would be the 3000GT, which Mitsubishi no longer makes (sigh).
As you might have guessed by now, I like sporty, fast and angular cars. I totally break social design theory but then again I’ve always been a bit of a tomboy. :)
Nice spyder derriere! I found a photo on Edmunds so I could get a feel for that model. It is a 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sypder, but I bet it is close.
Indeed the 3000 GT is breathtaking. It instantly reminded me of a Dodge Viper. (drool, pant, sigh)
And the question I’ve been rolling around in my head about gender and car design is this. Your post mentioned that car designers have found that women prefer rounded corners and men prefer angles. And that the symbol for female is a circle while males are arrows. So…my question is…isn’t the propogation of the species built on each gender enjoying the shape of the opposite gender?
Personally, a well crafted automobile is like art to me. No, let me say, a beautiful car IS art. And sometimes the right shape is angular and sometimes it is round. (I’ll even admit that I find the Hummer attractive in a brutish sort of way).

Howdy– I’m stuck in the airport trying to get home from vacation. However, I can easily show you a pic of my dream car from here.
here it is:
(deliberate blank space)
I hate cars!! I wish I never had to be in one or own one again! I want to teleport everywhere!
I get so car sick that cars lost all their appeal to me when I was about 7. Now they are just a means to an end for me. As long as my car runs and gets me where I want to go (I have a 1993 Geo Tracker), I will not spend my hard-earned cash on a vehicle.
I hope you realize that I grew up in Detroit, and I have just comitted the ultimate blasphemy on your blog. I hope none of my family ever sees this. ;)
P.S. Brian just read this and said “I thought Glenda rode a broom.” I had to explain the difference between the Good Witch (who I think gets to teleport– lucky!) and the Wicked Witch who gets the broom.
Actually, when I’m in Goodwitch mode, I travel by bubble!
