Just Do It!

I get impatient when the wheels of change move too slowly. That is why I maintain a URL outside my work space. Ahhhh…the relief of being able to go to my own URL and just do it. What is “It”? “It” might be:

  • making my site xhtml 1.0 strict
  • upgrading to the latest version of PHP in less than 30 minutes when I want to
  • installing an open source application and using it immediately
  • saying exactly what I think

And rather than these actions just being personally satisfying…I’ve found over and over again, that a “just do it” successfully implemented in my own space spurs change within my workspace. Not always…but often.

At this very moment, I’m reading a fascinating article by Andrew McAfee entitled “Enterprise 2.0: The Dawn of Emergent Collaboration“. Highlighter in hand…I’m marking my favorite passages. And I can’t resist sharing this one about the value of informal rollout of new technology.

Walking Through Poetry

My dear friend, Meesh, and I went to Robert Frost’s Farm in Derry, New Hampshire on December 31st. It was midday and a blanket of fresh snow covered the ground. Being there was like walking through poetry. It was so peaceful. I could feel the presence of Robert Frost in those snowy woods.

Slides and Pachyderms in the Museum

Some works of art are instantly accessible. Take the slides at the Tate Modern (aka the Unilever Series: Carston Höller). You don’t need to read a label or know the title of this exhibit to connect with it. You can just experience it.

I believe Carsten’s slide is a challenge to all museums to invite your visitors inside the art…to create opportunities for people to be transformed by their experience.

do u dotmobi?

Are you surfing the web from a mobile device? Wish you could just guess at the URL? Hmmmmm….I wonder if it is www.foo.com/mobile/ or perhaps www.foo.com/pda/ maybe I’ll try mobile.foo.com/ or even m.foo.com/. Damn it sure is hard to guess mobile URLs.

What Makes a Good Day?

Ever have one of those delightful days…where you seem to be moving with the rhythm of the world? When things you’ve dreamed about really happen? When unexpected gifts lead you to wonder…is this real?

Here are the things that made my day so very, very good:

Remembering the Mayflower

What was it like to step on the Mayflower back in 1620? Such a tiny ship to sail across the huge Atlantic. Would I have been brave enough to step on board and leave the solid ground behind? My relatives were. I’m 12 steps away from those courageous souls who boarded that ship almost 400 years ago.

Supporting Joe

Joe Clark MicropatronageJoe Clark is the king of captioning.

Joe’s quest: To run an independent accessibility research project focused on captioning, audio description, subtitling, and dubbing. After reading the clear and achievable goals of his research, I thought, “ya know, this is a great idea and I believe Joe is the perfect man for the job.” (click, enter dollar amount, submit)

No Limits!

One of my muses (chainsaw panda) shared a priceless video clip with me this morning. After I got up off the floor from laughing, I just had to share it with you.

So…if you want to know why I love being a woman born into a time and place where I’ve been given opportunity, inspiration and the belief that anything is possible…then look, listen and take heed…watch “Women: Know Your Limits” (which portrays the antithesis).

What if we were to remake this clip to portray the atmosphere at SXSW-Interactive?
