Have you heard about the latest research in technology that enables a person who is blind to see with their tongue? The device is called a brainport and it consists of cameras that send electrical impulses to the tongue. A person using the device can learn to interpret the impulses on their tongue as images.
You’ve got to see it (or is that lick it) to believe it. Technology May Give Blind a Touch of Sight.
How delicious is that?
How I stumbled on this I’m not sure (!) but when I saw the title of your post I just had to stop by. “You Lick Marvelous” How funny is that? It’s one of the best post titles I’ve seen!
To be honest though, the idea of licking things to “see” them – well that’s just gross!
I agree…in most cases…licking things to “see” them is less than desirable! But that isn’t how the Brainport really works. The brainport actually uses cameras attached to your forehead…then it translates the camera images into electronic impulses that you feel on your tongue. It is a bit like drawing a picture on your tongue.
When you were a kid, did you ever have someone draw a picture on your back? It is kinda like that. Except the device “draws” the picture on your tongue!
Glenda…You’ll never believe this. After reading the seeing with the tongue article on your blog, I tried the experiment on my blind cat.
Thanks alot….now he’s blind and dead. oh well – he was a good bird hunter in his day! Join us at Bix when you get a chance.
